MALTESER TRAY BAKE

MALTESER TRAY BAKE

MALTESER TRAY BAKE

EUPHOOOOORIAAAAA!!! :-) What's more seductive than Maltesers and Chocolate? Maltesers AND Chocolate AND Digestive biscuits ALL IN ONE BITE!  :-)  And I am sure the piece in the picture had two eyes, winking at me, saying 'Eat me, eat me'... Needless to say I did, right after the picture was taken... I had this as dessert for the first time a couple of weeks ago at my friend Helen's in England - thank you for an unforgettable evening and weekend - and was immediately hooked. But would I have to dedicate this post to somebody, it would have to be not only to them, but also to Ali & John B., and they would know exactly why :-)  I've been dreaming about this cake ever since, and finally 'gave in' when I needed a last minute contribution for an invitation last weekend.
The cake is actually not baked as the name says, but mixed together in a couple of minutes and then left to set in the fridge. I made it shortly before leaving, put it in the fridge of our friends on arrival, and by the time we were ready for dessert it was perfectly set - so it's really great as a last minute sweet. But watch out, this cake is very addictive! I cut it into small pieces because of its richness, but that turned out to be a mistake as the little pieces seemed to attract even more  :-)

100g butter
200g milk chocolate
3 Tbsp (45ml) Golden Syrup
225g Digestive Biscuits
225g Maltesers
(Digestive Biscuits are a very popular biscuit brand in the UK, but I find them, as well as the Golden Syrup, also here in Belgium in big supermarkets. Enclosed a website that shows an authentic looking recipe for the biscuits, but have not tried them myself.)

Melt the butter, chocolate and Golden Syrup together in a bowl over a pot of steaming water (I prefer to put them in the microwave, stirring every minute or more often to make sure the mix does not get too hot and the chocolate starts to crystallise).

MALTESER TRAY BAKE

Put the Digestive biscuits into a big plastic bag, then crush them into crumbs with a rolling pin. Add the biscuit crumbs, together with the Maltesers, to the mixture and stir well. The original recipe says to leave the Maltesers whole, but I split and partly crushed approximately one third of them with a sharp knife, and left the other two thirds whole.

Pour the mixture into a lined dish or tin, app. 15x10 cm in size, then cover and chill in the refrigerator until set. For special occasions spread a layer of melted white chocolate on top, followed by a layer of crushed Maltesers.

If you like tray bakes you should try fifteens, easy recipe, 15 digestives, 15 glace cherries chopped, 15 marshmallows chopped, 1 small can condensed milk, desicatted coconut. Method, crush all digestives to fine crumb then mix everything else together and shape into long roll/log shape. Roll log in coconut to coat. Chill in fridge for a few hours until set. Cut into 1 inch slices and enjoy.
